New blog

Some of you may have read at my other blog that I'm moving over to wordpress for the time since Blogger hasn't been working very well on my computer lately. It's a miracle that it's working long enough now for me to post. So, you can find me here. I may set up a blog similar to this one sometime in the future, but for now, I'm just going to make sure that wordpress will work okay with my computer.

Traffic

Obviously, the weekly playlists are no longer weekly. I'm finding every Sunday morning, that I do not have a playlist put together. So, they will now be featured every now and then. I'll put one up if I have one.

My sis just recently got me started on the band Tokio Hotel. I must say, they are awesome. If you haven't listened to them, I would recommend you do. Soon. Another someone you should listen to is Marie Digby. A record company found her on Youtube. She's amazing. She does a cover of Rihanna's song 'Umbrella', and it is excellent. I like Rihanna's version, but I must say, I like Marie Digby's cover a whole lot better.

Playlist

This week the playlist is short, but simple. I was trying to just pick one song from Lady Antebellum's CD, and I couldn't. So I decided that their CD is the playlist. I'm constantly listening to that CD; I never get tired of it. =) Sorry the playlist haven't been here lately..I've been really busy lately.

On a side note, listen to barcelona. They're awesome. (Thanks Marcy for telling me about them!!!!)

Pandora Radio

My sis showed me this really awesome site called Pandora. It's this really cool place where you type in the name of a song/artist that you like and then they create a station of music that's similar to the one you typed in. It's a really good place to find a ton of new music. (Which, of course, is what I enjoy doing most. ^^) Like, I found out that I really really love the acoustic version of 'Be My Escape' by Relient K. Anywho, all of you should go check it out!!!!!!!

Lady Antebellum and a CD player

Alright..since I'm on a trip and am currently visiting my oldest sister and her family, as you may have noticed, the weekly playlist is absent. It's been busy so far, but if I've got time, I might put one together tonight or early tomorrow morning.
Today was our first big shopping day (I live in a really small town..with no shopping choices...and not a very good music store. We take every chance we have to go to a real mall.) and, naturally, I splurged a little. The thing I'm most excited about is the three new CD's I got and the new CD player. (I can't put music on my Zune here...bummer. But, I wanted to listen to my new music..so I bought a cheap CD player.) I've been listening to Lady Antebellum non-stop tonight. I have to say I'm in love with their CD. I don't know what it is..but it's got a very awesome-something about it. I got the 'We the Kings' CD. I was hesitant to buy this one, since I really have only heard one song..so if anyone's listened to them, tell me what you think of 'em, okay? And then I got a Coldplay CD. ('Parachutes' if we're being specific. At least..I'm pretty sure that's what it's called. But it's got 'Yellow' on it..so, yay!) Yep. I'll be all set for the train back home when that time comes. Anywho, I'm exhausted. So, this is where the post ends!!!

Therapy

I haven't always been so obsessed with music. It was about a year ago that I really started to enjoy music more. When my sister Kelly relapsed with cancer in October of 2007, music became an escape for me. As I started at a new school, and things started to change, it became a necessity. It was one thing that didn't change. I could listen to a song on repeat for an hour, and it would still be the same song. And, it was a way to block out all the conversations I didn't want to hear, or a way for me to concentrate on something besides the cancer. When we finally got to go home after five months, music was my life. I couldn't go through a day without listening to it. It became something I desperately needed. We were home for a few days, and then my sister had to be admitted in to the hospital. Things started to go very wrong. They told us that she was dying, and we only had a few more days left with her. My oldest sister came with my two nephews so she could see Kelly. That hospital room was terrifying for me. I knew what was going to happen, and I couldn't believe it. So I distracted myself. I let my two-year old nephew drag me around the halls of the hospital and ran around with him. He was my escape for those few days. When she first went in to the hospital, I abandoned my basement bedroom and slept on our couch. I couldn't stand being so isolated down stairs. So, I would fall asleep listening to music or watching music videos on Vh1. Again, it was a way to keep my mind focused on something other than the cancer. When Kelly passed away on March 17th, music became so much more to me. It was my therapy. Because, again, it was always there. I started listening to more and more of it. My nephew was also a distraction again. While my parents and my oldest sister planned the funeral, I kept an eye on him and played with him. And then after the funeral, they left, and the flow of people stopped too. But the music kept playing. That's when I started using it even more as a way to get to sleep at night. Even now, I can hardly go to sleep without it. Certain songs can get me through the days that are just filled with reminders of Kelly and hard times, and other songs just get my mind off of everything that's going on. But it's always a way to escape, or to just make a day better. Because, when I find a new song that I absolutely am in love with, it does really make my day better. Music is my therapy, and I can't live without it.

Colbie Caillat, Forever the Sickest Kids, and Rascal Flatts

I like to write, a lot. But when I write, I have to have music. I can't write in absolute silence. (I can hardly stand silence, actually.) For some reason, there are a few bands that I especially like to listen to when I write. Colbie Caillat, Forever the Sickest Kids, and Rascal Flatts. I don't know what it is about these bands, but it seems I can write forever when I'm listening to them. It's strange how certain songs can trigger certain things.
Like when ever I hear the song 'My Generation' by Starfield I always think of my sister, Kelly. I remember sitting in the backseat of our van with her, driving around Conrad, and listening to that song and 'I Want my Mullet Back' by Billy Ray Cyrus. Whenever I hear 'Eye of the Tiger' I always think of one of my friends. We sang that song one year for a school play, and she always got really in to the song. It was hilarious. When I hear Josh Turner, I always think of my dad, no matter what song it is, because he always sings Josh Turner. So many songs bring back so many memories. Maybe that's one of the reasons I love music so much.

Tom Felton!!!!!

I forgot how much I love Purevolume. It's like, one of the best sites to find new bands. It seems like every time I go on to the site, I find some new awesome music. If you've never been, you should. Right now. And to make it easier for you, you can just copy and paste this link: http://www.purevolume.com/. (Nice, aren't I?) Anyway, it was my guitar teacher that first showed me this site, and I'll forever be grateful to him for that. I hadn't been on in a while, so I decided to go on tonight. They have so much cool music on here! Seriously.
Oh! You know Tom Felton? (He plays Draco Malfoy on the Harry Potter movies.) I found out tonight that he can sing..and play guitar! I saw some of his videos up on Youtube, and I can't believe I've never heard him before. It was quite a pleasant surprise. So..here's a video of him singing/playing!!! It's a preview of four different songs..so listen for the transitions between songs, 'kay? OH, and tell me what you think!

(I had to repost this, and make a few changes, because my computer was acting weird with the link and the video..which is why it's here.)

Let Go

Have you ever noticed that a lot of good bands have really..odd..names? Like..there's a band called Frou Frou. Or Shiny Toy Guns..Forever the Sickest Kids..Scary Kids Scaring Kids (I've never listened to them..just seen a CD.....) But I've come to realize that just because the name of the band is kinda strange, doesn't mean that they're no good. A lot of the time they've got awesome music. Like the song Let Go by Frou Frou. It's awesome. And Boys Like Girls did a really awesome cover of that song too. (Have you noticed I like the word awesome?)
It really stinks because right now, I have to go through and delete a whole bunch of stuff off of my Zune to make more room for new things. -sigh- At least there are a few things I can get rid of that won't bother me too much....anywho...I'm gonna go search for some more music. (Because what else would I be doing on a Friday night, right? haha.)

Sealion

One of my favorite bands right now is Feist. I don't know what it is..but I just really love The Reminder, which is Feist's newest CD. I first started listening to them when I saw the video for the song Mushaboom (which is an awesome song, and a cool video too) on Vh1. I discovered a lot of bands just watching the 'Nocturnal State' on Vh1. A while back, I was having a lot of trouble sleeping, and so I watched the music videos on Vh1 a lot at night, because there really wasn't much on. I also found out that I hate the song A Long Road To Ruin by The Foo Fighters. Okay, not so much the song I hate, but the video. I think it's quite stupid.
Eek!! I ran in to a MAJOR problem last night. I don't have any space left on my Zune!!!!!! What am I going to do? I've had this for such a short time...and I pretty much listen to every thing I have on there. -sigh- It's definitely a problem.
Anywho, I've got to run. (sorry the posts have been short lately. I'm a busy person. =)

Seven Days of Lonely

Of course, today, I was super-excited to be able to actually go to a real store that sells cd's. (my town has a very small mall. There isn't much to it.) Together, me and my sister bought six new cd's today. I'm going to have a lot to listen to. =) One of the things I love about music is that there is always new cd's coming out, and new bands. It never ends. I don't think I could ever get tired of listening to music, or searching for new music. I seriously just spend hours on the computer listening to music. My poor Zune can't hold too many more cd's...oh well. That's not going to stop me from buying more cd's!!!! =)
Sorry this is such a short post...I'm extremely exhausted....and my brain isn't working very well right now.

Always The Best Man

I discovered a new way to find really good music. I was looking at a band's myspace page, and scrolled down to their friends list. I wasn't too surprised to find a different band on their top friends. So, I clicked on that band, and listened to them for a while. And after I listened to their songs, I went to their friends list and clicked on another band. I did that for a while, just listening to random songs on random bands' pages. Which is how I found out about Landon Austin. (If you want to listen to him...here's the link. http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=156312634 ) I'm really liking his sound, but then again, I'm pretty easy to win over when it comes to music.
One of my favorite things to do while I'm on the computer is go on to http://www.playlist.com/ and listen to music, obviously. They always have a featured playlist, which I only occasionally listen to. But today, when I logged on, I decided to give this person's music choice a chance, and played the first song. Instantly, I knew this random person has good taste in music. If I had never started listening to their playlist, I wouldn't have discovered a band called Frankly Speaking. I loved the one song that was on the playlist, and went straight to the band's myspace. (Another addiction of mine. Myspace.) -sigh- I love finding good music. There's a special kind of feeling, of excitement, and curiosity when you come upon a band you've never heard before. (Well, for me anyways.)
Another good way to find new music? Movie soundtracks. I just watched the movie Juno for the first time today, and that movie has awesome music. I can't wait to buy the soundtrack.

Well, I'm going to go search for more music. I'd LOVE to hear about other bands..or your opinion on a band I've talked about. Just leave me a comment!!

Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun

Welcome to my blog! So, before I really get started, let me introduce myself. My name, is Samantha. I'm known as Rose to a lot of people (Rose is my middle name) so you're welcome to call me either Samantha (or any form of that name) or Rose. It doesn't matter to me. I made this blog for a few reasons. First, I'm completely obsessed with music. Secondly, I love to talk about music, so this seemed like a good place to do that. Third, I love to hear about awesome bands that I've never listened to, so I made this blog with the hope that I could possibly get some recommendations. I don't really have a preference for genre when it comes to music. I'm not really in to rap/hip-hop, but every now and then I listen to it. My family is musical. We all love singing, my mom can play piano, I know a tiny bit of piano, me and my sister both can semi-play guitar, and we just really like to listen to all types of music.
I can't promise that I'll be completely committed to this blog, because I've failed at blogs before. But I will try to post regularly, and hopefully more than once a week. (Again, I'm not making any promises.) Enjoy.
